A Trip Back in Time

I spent the weekend in the Hudson Valley in New York with my kids, my parents, three of my sisters and all their kids, and friends of our family.  It was a magical time!  The entire weekend was to be a surprise birthday celebration for one of my sisters, planned by her boyfriend and her business manager.  Unfortunately, our father slipped last week during a phone conversation, (he's a terrible secret-keeper), but that in no way diminished the fun we had.

Our events agenda included apple picking, hay rides, square dancing (so hilarious!), horseback riding, a hunt for pumpkins hidden in a corn field, a birthday dinner in a circa 1760s farmhouse, s'mores by the bonfire, pumpkin carving for the kids, and lots of eating and drinking.

Our party staying in several local Bed and Breakfasts, restored historic homes with the most gorgeous wide plank wood floors and furnished entirely with antiques.  I slept in a four-poster bed and bathed in a claw foot tub.  I had my notebook and pen out all weekend, taking notes to capture the essence of these homes preserved in time.

I'm going to have all the photos I took of the houses printed and they're going on my design wall behind the computer monitor in my writing studio.  You never know when you'll need details, inspiration, or descriptions for a story!  I try to take advantage of every place I visit, even the more mundane or everyday spots, and record as many details as I can for future writings.

I was fortunate to be able to do this kind of research without spending any money.  My trip was paid for entirely -- a gift to my sister to have her whole family present.  But a writer is always researching -- at the grocery store, in the local botanical gardens, at a bus station, in the mall and restaurants.

Where are your favorite places to research for your writing?

I like coffee-table books; the pictures send my imagination off! The more exotic, the better.

omg, Nicole, that is so so gorgeous! I love that window (first pict)! In the sequel/prequel to DN I had the characters visit a resort in Costa Rica I went to in college w/my roommate. Her father was in the restaurant biz and we got to go/stay in super swank accommodations... It was very good "research" material~ ;p

I'm always on the look out when I am traveling, even on daily trips. I see things on TV and research them online. I really like people watching. A prime time is while waiting in line or sitting in a resturant waiting on your food. I love to watch people interact.

Great pictures, Nicki!

I'm glad y'all had fun! Loved the pictures on Facebook--looks so beautiful up there. :)

I try to look at any new experience as research for my writing. For instance, I'm getting my first-ever fillings next week, and I told Evan that at least I'd know what it was like...*sigh*

I love bed and breakfasts. They do inspire many interesting perspectives on things. I like cabins and lodges for that as well. Parks and backwoods trails help me brainstorm. Also, walking in the rain. IDK what it is about the rain hammering on my umbrella that makes my Muse dance but it works every time. Beautiful pictures, thanks for sharing them.

For a while, when I could still afford, it, I used to like to sit in bars and people watch. I discovered the people watching was MUCH better in high-class bars, too. Nothing like nursing a martini and watching a wealthy grandmother get so pizzled that she falls of her barstool. Good times.

(She was fine, btw. Just embarrassed.)

The photos are lovely, Nic. The first one is my favorite.
And that it was all free? SCORE! Huzzah!

Every experience, every nuance is all fodder for my inner muse. :)

Love,
Lola

Gorgeous pics! I'm ashamed to say I don't do any research into places unless I need specific facts I have no idea about, and in that case I use the internet. I've been to and stayed at so many places in my life that I don't really need to 'research' yet. It's all stored in my memory! :o)

Bed and breakfasts are so much better than hotels.
Hope your father was able to enjoy it as well.

That sounds like such a great time!!! I don't do any hands-on research re: places. I just use the web.

Oooh! Beautiful country (and posted photographs), that Hudson Valley, which is not far from where I live with my daughter. My favorite places: where I live in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley; the New England area; and upstate New York.

And how wonderful that you used this wonderful trip to do "research." Yes, we all need background/locale for our stories. Yes, we should all take advantage of every place we visit for future reference.

Glad you had such a great time.

Love the pictures. I don't get to travel much, but I notice everything, including the mess my kitchen happens to be in right now. I think the mountains and wildlife in Colorado are very inspiring.

Sorry I haven't been by for awhile. I've been sick.

I want pictures of the square dancing! (I'm a sucker for anything deemed hilarious.)

Thanks for sharing these lovely pics. Fall's such a wonderful season--and sounds like not a moment of the trip was wasted on you, note-taker extraordinaire!

Oh my, that sure was a trip back in time. I'd give anything to have a group of people to square dance with. (But I think I'd need a charafe of wine first...preferably Rioja, though I know you'd prefer French :-))

Thanks for sharing the photos. It's nice to know barn life still exists.

I love the pictures! What an awesome idea to keep them around for inspiration! A few years ago on a volunteer trip, I stayed in a very old house in Chicago that reminds me of the one in your photos. It was so inspiring. :) Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like a great time. The places I travel too as well as the everyday provide me with the images I collect, (camera and sketch pad) and the ideas: I record in journals before starting another day.

Totally awesome place. I want to be part of your family.

Wow. Next time I need inspiration - I'll take a surprise vaca with you. Looks amazing. How can being in those rooms NOT invite a story?

It looks fantastic, I hope you'll put it in one of your novels. Such a perfect setting.

I love the pictures. I haven't tried a B&B yet.

I feel like I'm always observing and researching.

I could do some research in the places you posted. At least I could get some R & R so when I get to the library for the necessary research, I'm restored.
