Wading Along a Flooded Memory Lane

I'm supposed to be getting ready for our trip.  There are a lot of things to think about when you prepare to leave the country for three weeks.  Wardrobes and shoes need to be appraised, bills need to be scheduled for payment, camera and video memory sticks need to be purchased, airline guidelines need to be reviewed so we don't arrive at the airport and learn we have too many, too heavy bags.

But, I'm a procrastinator.

I do a little something each day, so I can hold my head high in the evening when hubby asks what I accomplished.  Yesterday though, when the kids wanted to spend time with me doing "something NOT boring," I decided to embark on  a project that's been long overdue -- and admittedly one I don't have time for right now.

For the fourteen years hubby and I have been married, we've taken photographs to archive our lives together.  Everyone does, right?  Our problem is we've always printed out the photos from film (until two years ago when we scored our first digital camera), enjoyed flipping through the pictures for a week or so, and then tossed the envelop into a royal blue footlocker that once served as a coffee table when we were newly weds, and now occupies a stretch of wall in my writing studio.  It barely closes.

The kids and I started in Target, where we optimistically purchased two photo binders holding a total of 600 pictures.  By late afternoon, it was clear to us that we'd need to make a return trip.

We looked through hundreds and hundreds of pictures, laughing at forgotten memories, oohing and ahhing over the glossy images of the kids' baby years, telling and retelling the stories of our lives.

Each photo is one significant moment in time.  Oh, the stories.

The pic at the top of this post was taken one month after Sidney was born.  She's snuggled in the carrier strapped to my chest.  Cody was a month shy of two years old.  We spent that day roaming the ruins of the chateau, dating from the 10th century, of Foix, which is a wonderful little city in the department of Ariège.  At the time, we lived outside Toulouse, and Foix was just a forty-five minute drive away.  It is considered the gateway to the beautiful Pyrenées Mountains, the natural southern border between France and Spain.  (Learn more about Foix HERE.)

This is a beautiful photo of Foix (thanks, Source).  In the photo of us, above, we were making our way down the cobblestoned path from the chateau to the city below.

Now that we have a digital camera, we're terrible about printing out pictures.  But once I have all these memories stored in their binders, I'm turning my sights on the memory sticks and computer hard drive.  Call me old-fashioned, but I like to hold books of photos in my hands, in a comfy chair looking out a sunny window, with a cup of fresh brewed coffee.  Memory lane loses some of its charm when I'm staring at a computer screen.

What about you?  Do you print photos or prefer storing them online?  Glass protected paper photo or digital frame?  Paper of plastic?

I'm terrible at this! Jessica's first year is in photo albums, but nothing has been organized since. I have tons of pictures that need to be organized, but it's a task that has been too overwhelming for me to embark on. Just yesterday, I took two memory sticks and loaded about 2000 pictures onto my computer. I'm planning to better organize them on Shutterfly and take advantage of their free print offers...because just like you, I like to look at photo albums, not see my pictures on the computer. Good luck with this project! Maybe you'll be the inspiration to get my rear in gear! By the way, I would love to peruse through your albums when you're done! :)

I am going to miss you so much when you're gone!

My photos are stuck in three picture boxes upstairs in the closet. I went to Target too and bought a whole bunch of little albums (to hold one roll of film each) but haven't put the pictures in them. I also have almost 30 rolls of film to be developed. I know, I 've got to get those done.
Someday, I say to myself.

After a cursory count, I found 24 photo albums stuffed into cupboards and book shelves in our house...and we stopped using film about five years ago. If I analyze what is stored on a memory stick now, it could easily fill another 24 albums. It's a space issue for us...and our computer scrolls through our pictures as a screensaver, so it's a nice way to be reminded of so many of the significant moments we've experienced along the way.

My wife tried to do the Creative Memories scrapbooking thing for a while. Now, mainly, we do the hard-drive thing. Maybe when things slow down again we'll be able to print the photos and actually, like, do something with them.

I bet I have everyone beat - over 200 photo albums!

Of course, I've been a professional photographer for 20 years, so that accounts for many photos. I had my own darkroom and worked a few years in photo labs.

I've had a digital for 4-5 years now and I still print out photos. Not every single one, but well over half. Every 1-2 months I upload the best to WinkFlash and order prints. Like physical books, I prefer physical photos. I also want something tangible. With digital, there's no negatives. What if the files corrupt? All those photos, gone forever. So I am careful to print out a good selection to save.

I like physical photos as well. We have numerous albums around the house.

When I had an old-fashioned camera, I always got the photos developed and put them into albums chronologically. Our digital camera has actually been bad for me, because now I never bother to print anything out, I just look at them on the computer. I've been telling myself for years I need to go through our old files, print out the best ones, and put them in albums, but it seems like it would take forever, so I haven't done it. What a great project to do with your kids, though!

Have an awesome trip!

Lovely picture of you and the kidlets =)

Everyone in my family now uses digital cameras, so a lot of the time our pictures just end up on the computer or on memory sticks. However, when we do eventually print them (we do it about once a year) we put them all into photo albums. We're like you--we like to hold the pictures in our hands. As well, there are only so many memory sticks you can buy, LOL

We always print out photos (except for those that aren't so good, or where I look like a crazy maniac...). I just like to take photos into my hands when I look at them.
Btw, we're also preparing for a three week trip. But I haven't really prepared anything yet. Still two weeks until we leave. Maybe I should start my preparations soon... :D

I used to be really good at this. We have binders and binders (about 30??) organized with photos. Then the camera broke one day about 7 years ago. I've hardly taken a photo since - and we have bought a digital. I just got out of the habit of taking pictures. Gotta get back into it!

I could have written this post!
We leave for a month long vacation to coastal Maine (we leave in two weeks, we are driving) , then come home for 2 days, and leave for coastal south carolina for another month. I have to pack linens and everything. We are taking the dogs (2) and ...well, you know, there's a LOT to do to get ready.
In that time I also have my daughters dance recital...he dance company is a big deal and there are 5 shows in 3 days...so next weekend (F, Sat., and SUnday) are totally shot...and we leave the following weekend. We have dress rehearsals last week and this coming week...every freaking night! (and it's an hour away, each way!)

I am stressed out, and haven't accomplished much to get ready.

I have a million scrap books, and fancy paper, and millions more pictures that haven't made it into the books. But that's for another day. ;)

I'm totally Scarlet O'Hara-ing my way through this month!

Somehow we'll be packed, even if it's all at the last minute. Whatever we forget to pack, we can buy when we get there, right? Right. :)

Have a wonderful weekend...Cheers! *clink*
Love,
Lola

Nicole, thanks for the post and the question. My wife and I are terrible with this subject. All of the digital stuff is on the computer; however, all of the old stuff or potraits are stuffed into several drawers...which hardly close. I'm hoping this summer, when the students and their teacher mother are all home, they will take on this project. Perhaps if I start it...right?
Have a great vacation.

I don't take as many pictures as I would like to but now I keep them mostly online. Unless, it's a picture I want to share with someone then I put them on a disc and either make them myself or just give the disc. I don't want to lose memories in a fire or water damage or just by losing the picture. So I like the multiple places we can put them nowadays.

My wife was into the whole scrapbooking thing for a long time, until we got a digital camera. Thats when she started playing around with the picture DVD's she makes. So up until ten years ago all our photos were in binders, but since then they're stored on our computers or one of her DVD shows.

I have to say, there's nothing like seeing your old photos up on the big screen, set to your favorite music. We pop them in all the time, and we hardly ever looked at the picture albums.

If you ever want to have one made for your clan...just let me know. I'm kinda close to the owner, so I could probably cut you a deal! :)

LOVE the pictures! And we're big fans of the kodak photo books. I've also been known to dabble in some iMovie video/photo creations. I try to pull stuff like that together once a year...

Thank you for sharing the pictures. They're lovely!

I used to like to put together my own photo album, when I was little. But now, it's so easy to just store everything on the computer. My parents, however, do print out selected pictures from time to time. I do like looking at them in hands more, as they're more real, more precious, somehow.

Having lived in Italy, I would have sworn the first photo was central Italy around Perugia. But obviously the Romans did well whether it was Italy, France, or anywhere else in western Europe.

Lately I hardly print any pics, storing them on computer and only printing those good enough to frame. Or I'm into the Shutterfly books. Great gifts and albums!

I hardly print anything any more.
Computer storage seems so much easier.
Pretty much the only time I print a photo is to send it to my 80 year old mum.

I still print my photos! I used to have photo albums, but now I keep them in photo boxes (zebra-striped, of course!) because they hold a lot more and don't take up as much space on my shelves. I'm thinking about reverting to photo books now. I got ones made for my wedding and Honeymoon photos. It takes up even less space, and you can personalize the pages like a scrapbook!

Good luck preparing for your trip!!!

I used to print out photos and carefully place them in a photo album. However, recently I've been a little lazy and they are remain on my computer only. I did a world trip 2 years ago and I'm ashamed to say that I haven't printed those ones yet. I really must, think your post has prompted me to do so!

Oh, this is a huge dilemma for me. I, too, loved getting that packet of pictures. Often, threw it in a box when done looking. Now, I have large boxes full of pics. I also have pics stuck in the computer which might some day crash. I love pictures and photography, but I need to develop (ha!) a system to manage the pictures. The blog helps for a few that work for the post, but daily life YIKES, I need help. Enjoy gazing down memory lane!

Wow, have a great trip!

We used to print photos, but now we store them online. It's a lot cheaper and we're both computer people, so I feel like we can access them whenever we want to. My sister never goes on the computer, so she needs the actual printed photos. And she likes to scrap book, so she needs them for that as well. I think it depends on the person.

I have many more pictures stored digitally than printed out, BUT I like printed pictures better. I try to print as many photos as I can, but I usually end up taking more photos than I have time to print! Yeah, I'm a real picture person. Very interesting post.

Hope you have a wonderful time on your trip!

Beautiful photos, Nicole. Ach, we'll miss you when you're away!

I'm an online photo gal. But I would like to have them all printed out and filed - I'm just too lazy.

Well, when I do start world traveling (when? I don't know...) I think I'd love to just collect binders and binders of pictures, even if the digital variety would be easier.

And have fun on your trip! xD
