My Muse is not a Method Actress

I took an acting class in college.  I don't know what possessed me, or why I thought I'd enjoy it.  I didn't.  The idea of being an actress was a glimmering pool of water enticing me, and I was the cat that plunged in, only to realize milliseconds later, with claws splayed and ears flat against my head, that it wasn't in my nature to be wet.  Life experiences teach us about ourselves.  That semester I learned I have too many inhibitions to stand on a stage and howl at an imaginary moon at the top of my voice, or hop around pretending I'm a rabbit and then morphing into a human who embodies the physical and emotional characteristics of the rabbit.  Method acting, improv, vocalization -- just not in my nature to explore.

Maybe that's why writing is so appealing to me.  I conjure the character in my mind, and explore her through written words.  I read once on a writer's blog that she liked to get up in her writing studio and physically act out the scene she was crafting, capturing a realistic account of her characters' movements and gestures.  Somehow, I can't even picture myself doing that.  Not from fear of being seen or looking ridiculous.  It just wouldn't feel natural to me.

I prefer to observe people in everyday life.  Always having a notebook handy helps me record what I later use in my writing, but when it isn't polite to spontaneously scribble in public, I store slice-of-life moments in mental files, to be journaled later.

Last week, we adopted a baby kitten -- and yet another opportunity for characterization ideas presented itself.  Getting to know a new pet is surprisingly similar to getting to know a new character.  At first glance, the physical characteristics are noted.  (This kitten looks black, but upon closer examination you see much of her fur is gray with black tips.)  As she becomes more comfortable here and we gain her trust, her true personality begins to shine through.  And, as she is confronted with new challenges (locating her litter box; processing noise from the vacuum cleaner; figuring out what lies beyond the hallway entrance), we see her inner conflicts come into play (she was only a couple weeks old when she was abandoned by her owner, and was later rescued from a drain pipe -- her first instinct when frightened is to hide).

Characters are everywhere, around us and inside us.  To truly capture them is to be a writer.

Here are some pics of Lily-poo, newest princess of our castle:

Too cute for words!

Ooh, scary claws!

Take me to your leader.

Have you ever been inspired for a character by a pet?

Lily-poo is GORGEOUS!!!! Lucky you to have her. Lucky her to have you.

I have never been inspired to creat a character from a pet, but I have had some great pets become characters, if that makes any sense.

I missed you so much while you were in France, I'm so glad you're back. ((big giant hugs))

My youngest sister is an improve actor. it freaks me the heck out. no thanks, not my cup of tea either

Lily is so adorable! You can tell she's taking it all in.

Hmmm... I can't say I've ever been inspired for a character by a pet. But, as a kid, I did write lots of stories with animals in main roles. Does that count? :)

She is adorable!! Love it.

I minored in theatre, but it was TECHNICAL theatre all the way. Painting, light design, props, etc. I like doing musical theatre as part of the ensemble, but I hate everything about acting. Method acting in particular just...I don't know. It's great that it works for some, but to me it's just redamndiculous. :)

You know, I must have read that same blog, because I remember the writer who talked about acting out her scenes...

That isn't something that would likely work for me -- like you, I tend to stay more within my mind for writing purposes -- but everyone needs to figure out what works for him/herself, right?

Have to agree with Piedmont about your new kitten. She is quite adorable. (Now I need to engage in something super manly to compensate for admitting to that. Perhaps I will wrestle a bear.)

Lily-poo! we love you~

no pets have inspired me yet, but my cat Flower is one of the few family members who very much approves of my quiet, solitary writing habit. She's always with me... ;p

Me = unamazing actress, writer
my older brother = amazing actor, HRM

go figure. Good stuff~

LOVE THIS POST!!! What a cute little princess. Yes my cats often inspire me and help with new characters, they are easy to talk to and with their soft meows they know exactly what to say!

Happy Wednesday!

Aww...my Keats used to look just like that--and how he's almost 9. Black cats are so elegant!

Interesting what you said about acting. I was big into theater in college, though I was somewhat chicken about being onstage and did a lot of tech--props, costumes, stage managing. What I enjoyed most about acting classes was practicing embodying another personality. I think it's why I prefer writing in first person.

Anne~ It's great to be back -- and I missed YOU too!!

Sarah~ Your sister is a brave soul. I can't even improv-write (you should have seen how many times I backspaced while typing this response :P !)

Samantha~ LOL, that definitely counts!

Summer~ I would have been much better behind the scenes, painting props and all. And musical theater...for that you have to sing, right? Yeah, I would suck at that, too!

J.M.~ Don't worry! My hubby is an alpha male and you should see the way he cuddles this kitten...hang on, what? Oh. Hubby wonders if he can have a go at the bear after you...

Leigh~ I'd love to comment better, but my son is trying to talk to me...hang on, what? No, I don't remember all the lyrics to Paradise By the Dashboard Light...shhh! I can't concentrate...

Jen~ Kitties make the best conversationalists! Meow. Happy Wednesday to you, too!!

Laurel~ Cool observation! And I shy away from first person narration in my own writing...I'm going to think on that today! Thanks!!

I've always thought it would be cool to be in a play or something, but then I realize I have a hard time talking in public let alone acting in public.

Good for you for taking a chance.

Acting isn't for everyone, but I LOVE it. It did take me a while to get used to the glare of attention, though.

Aww, I've always wanted a black cat! I have a gray one named Albert and he's an odd one; he sleeps in the strangest places (sinks, boxes, cupboards). Once when I was putting up some glasses, he hopped up into the cabinet, the cheeky little cat.

Hi,

Oooh cute kitty!!

Hee hee, had to laugh at idea of author acting out scenes!

My dirty mind went into full spin on that: I guess she wasn't into writing sex scenes! Sorry, but tickled pink thinking about it. ;)

I have to admit that I didn't read one word of this post...just scrolled down to see Lilly-poo. She is SOOOO cute! I can't wait to see her in person! Congrats on the newest member of your fam! Thanks for everything, too...you're a true friend and I love you!

Congrats on your adoption! She's a doll.

I agree with everything you said. I'm much more natural and comfortable in a watchful place, observing and learning and storing.

I think it's so important that we accept this about ourselves, instead of trying to be something (like an actor) we're not. :)

Aw lil' Lily Poo is gorgeous. I am so glad she has found her way to a lovely home with you. I also did drama lessons for a while, convinced I was going to be an actress. It didn't last!

AW! I am so envious of your kitten - I want one, I want one! Ahem. That's probably the reason why all my novels have a cat in them somewhere... I have cat envy!

Patty~ It's so funny; I can babble in a public speaking format all day long and feel totally comfortable, but acting took me too far outside my comfort zone. Thanks for visiting!

Amanda~ I can't wait until this little gal figures out how to jump on stuff. I wonder what hiding places she'll find high off the ground!

Francine~ I'm cracking up! And now my mind is happily there in the gutter next to yours!!

Tonya~ Love ya too, sis!

Janna~ I totally agree with you!

Jemi~ Hi sweetie!!

Jayne~ At least we tried, right? So glad you visited!

Talli~ I'm with ya -- there's something sweet about having a cat in a house. You should get one!

Awwwww! She's so cute!

I can't say my cats or other animals have inspired a character, per se, but I have learned a lot about people and characters while watching them interact with each other and people. It's fascinating!

Jaydee Morgan said...

She's adorable!! I'm going to have to start paying more attention to my pets now - perhaps there's some good fodder there.

Unknown said...

Cherie~ They are fascinating to watch, aren't they? Animal behavior often mirrors human behavior -- not that it's all that surprising, considering we're all part of the animal kingdom. But still!

Jaydee~ Excellent fodder, even! Thanks for visiting, sweetie!

Awww, Lily-poo is soooo cute. I've never been inspired by a pet for a character yet, but I think you make a great point.

Lily is sooo adorable!!! She's a beautiful kitten! Animals are fascinating to watch. When I was a kid, I loved reading novels with animals, like Stuart Little and the Redwall series. I thought it was cool how the animals were personified!

And yes, I have had the experience of an animal inspiring a human character!

great post!!!! What a cute kitty cat!!!

Yes I've used pets to develop the charaeter of animals in my writing. I know it's a mystery but I think all characters should be developed and animal personalities are so cool.

I loved acting in school and was in a few school plays. But fame has always scared me so I didn't pursue it as a career as it could involve a lot of public exposure.

AWWWW!!!! What a cute kitten!!!! Dude, I totally know what you mean about getting to know a pet being like getting to know a character. I adopted my kitten in April, and it was the same thing :-P

I'm still learning about her 4 months later!

OMG!!! Lily-poo is ADORABLE!!! I want her! Can I have her?
I actually have no pets, so pretend I'm gushing over your kitty for a few minutes.

Lily is going to take over your house, isn't she?

Aww, so cute! I wish I could have a kittie, but I'm allergic. RIght now we just have fish, but I'm sad to say they haven't inspired me yet. Maybe it's because they're not cuddly?

I had something to say, I did. But the minute I laid eyes on Lily-poo I forgot what it was. She is sooooo adorable. How do you keep your hands off her long enough to write.

Lily-poo is darling! Just a tiny thing. Oh how I have kitten envy! I am allergic, sadly.
(so I have 2 non-shedding dogs, a Westie and a Bichon. The bichon is the puppy- love of my life. LOVE her. But I'd love to add a kitty to the family. *sigh*)

When I was a child I LOVED reading Stuart Little, Ms. Frizby, Watership Down, Charlotte's Web, etc. They're still some of my favorites. To this day I cannot kill a spider -even though they freak me out- and I let the bunnies eat my veggie garden. Someday I'd like to write a book with animals as the main characters.

Notice that you used a cat metaphor about the acting? Well done.

Love,
Lola

OMG too cute! I could never do that physical acting out a scene thing, but I have enjoyed being an actor before from time to time.

Awww! Lily-poo is so adorable!! :D

I have, in fact, been inspired by pets. My recently finished MG novel is about animals, and it started as a "what if" idea -- what if there was so much more to my pets than I thought? What if they had their own society, their own issues and dangers, and being a pet to me is just their day job? I love animals, so this was a blast to write.

Oh, and some advice: take plenty of pictures of Lily-poo while she's still a baby! Like kids, they grow up fast!

Susan Fields said...

What a darling kitten - I want her!

I do sometimes act out maybe a gesture here or there - I've never thought about acting out an entire scene. That's a very interesting idea. I might have to try that.

I LOVED acting! I actually had a partial theater scholarship for a term or two. SO much fun becoming someone else for a while. Loved the escapism and the craft of it!

But I've never thought of watching animals for clues to their personalities. Intriguing thought, good lady. Nicely done!

And... cute kitteh. :)

Oh my gosh, how cute! She is just adorable. I wish her the best in her new home- I'm sure she'll be spoiled!

I used to love acting. I took drama and theatre studies classes in high school. I really got into it, but as I grew older I began to shy away from it, and I lost my knack. I performed in quite a few plays atually, a couple of shakespeare works too, in fact. But I became quite reclusive after starting university. Strange really. I guess I just got into the habit of sitting alone writing essay after essay, that I forgot how to physically exress myself!
