~ Little Drummer Boy ~
Our house has been transformed; no longer is it the artsy abode with bold colored walls -- well, the walls still boast daring tones... But they are now the bedecked backdrop for twinkling lights, merry Santas, jolly elves, peaceful angels, and sparkling orbs in juicy hues. Johnny Mathis sang the sound track of my childhood holidays, and watching the children bob their heads and sing the choruses as they hung ornaments on the tree had my soul smiling. I enjoyed the eggnog better this year than most. (...maybe I've finally figured out the perfect ratio of brandy to nog...) All in all, our decorating weekend was a blast.
When the last bobble was hung on the tree, we stepped back to survey our work. I cupped my chin in the groove at the base of my thumb. "Hmm," I said, "it's missing something..."
"You're right," declared Sidney, my peppy ten-year-old daughter and future party planner extraordinaire. "It needs presents. I'll go get some."
I snagged her arm as she strode past, headed for her bedroom closet where I know since September she's been making, wrapping and stowing presents for all of us. I pulled her into a snuggle, her back against my chest and my arms around her, and the smell of her shampoo, mingled with the evergreen and nutmeg, intoxicated my senses. A moment of pure joy to remember forever.
And something else for me to remember: I have not been holiday shopping since September...and the kids only have two weeks of school before they're home for the break...so I'd better take a cue from my daughter and get this Christmas bulb rolling!
Hope your Holiday preparations are underway and bringing you much joy!

It's great when the house is all decorated! Loved your description of your daughter.
I love decorating for Christmas. It is a magical time, especially with family, music and spiked drinks. :)
I am done with the decorating and shopping, but nary a gift has been wrapped or a card sent. I'm getting there.
Happy holidays, my sweet friend.
Love,
Lola
I was decorated completely the weekend after Thanksgiving, and I've been trying to keep the kittens out of the tree...not going so well. :)
Almost all my shopping is done; just trying to finagle a few more things out of the budget. But I've been wrapping as I go, as Sidney's right--the tree looks much better with presents. :)
I love those sweet moments. :)
I'm slowly getting there on the shopping. Hard to believe they'll be out of school so soon.
What a sweet description!
And what a scary revelation, that you haven't finished shopping yet. ;)
I actually started early this year, so I am just picking up a few more things for everyone. I am so glad I didn't have to deal with the holiday crowd too much.
Happy holidays!
I've started, but I have to do some more this morning. Guess I'd better dry my hair now. :)
hi miss nicole! wow that got some tear for me cause it was soooo much love and family stuff. i bet your house is looking all happy and sparkly. maybe you could do a picture and share all that happy stuff with us.
...hugs from lenny
very cool. We had our insane Christmas performance weekend--only Nutcracker to go! but this week is our decorating week. Youngest wants to go outdoors with it...
Hubs + me = mbrrr...
but I bet she wins! ;p
Love your descriptions of the transformation and your sweet girl. My daughter also already has gifts for me and her dad wrapped and under the tree. So cute!
I got the first two gifts shipped this morning while doing a postal run for work (multitasking WIN!). The decorating was our Thanksgiving break project. Hubby was a teensy miffed we did it before the first Sunday of advent, but sometimes you just have to flex about these things.
This is such a sweet post! I always start decorating the weekend after Thanksgiving! I finished writing out my Christmas cards over the weekend. I'm nearly done Christmas shopping (I've finished shopping for my husband!) but I still have some baking to do. I love doing Christmasy things, though!!!
Lovely post! Kids are so conscientious about Christmas. I think they're trying to give us the hint: Get going, Mom:)
Purchase and wrap immediately, because you know kids like to snoop.
I'm done with my shopping!!
I've barely started!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for making me smile :)
What a truly wonderful moment. we havn't even started decorating yet, but I do have all my presents bought. I'm hoping to get some tree time with my girls this Thursday when finals have died down to a slow roar
Such a busy time, but rarely do we get to step back and see our houses looking so festive! Shopping? Yikes! I'd better get started...
Very nice Nicole...
What a lovely vignettte - such a sweet moment in time. I feel all glowy inside! That could be the champagne...
What a sweet post, your daughter sounds wonderful! I love those moments when the tree is up, lights are on, decorations out and everything cleaned up after. Now it's time to buy the presents! I've not done it either. Ooops better get busy.
Your daughter sounds precious.
Jai
My house is decorated and I need to finish shopping, but even with all the stress it is worth it! Your daughter sounds lovely. Thanks for sharing your sweet moment.
I love a decorated house! I think I'm mostly done with my shopping already! Now I just need to make cookies. Lots of cookies, :)
pictures! pictures! I love Christmas time...but this year I was lazy and didn't put out half of my stuff.
Your descriptions of your children are always so beautiful. The love you have just flows into your words. <3
I'm not a decorator. *wince* I know it is horrible, but I just hate it. As to the shopping ... THAT I love! LOL One last package on its way and a few stocking stuffers that I will buy this weekend and I am done! Lucky for me, my co-worker is a decorating/wrapping fool! Cass wraps all my presents for me and loves doing it. SO I am ready to go. Bring on the holidays. I am ready for the New Year!
Holiday shopping. It's no fun. But I love this time of year! Hope you have a great holiday season!
Sounds like your daughter has the best of the Christmas spirit! :)
Thanks to my daughter and my sister I'm actually ahead of the game in shopping this year. Left to my own devices I would be scary behind!
I love, love, love that photo! My 11-year-old daughter has been begging me to take her Christmas shopping, but we haven't gotten out there yet. She's off school next week, a week earlier than her siblings, so we'll go soon!
