Tick, Tock, Write a Lot

Just when I think life can't get any busier, I succumb to the urges of my sisters' long-standing, near-failed campaign to get me on FaceBook.  Reconnecting with my family at last week's funeral and baptism melted my resolve like ice cream in Georgia sun, and I can't seem to get enough of them.  Plus, I'm finding my college sorority sisters, who I haven't chatted with since before my Peace Corps years.  Okay, I admit it: I'm loving FB.  (Let the ridicule begin.)

It's never been more important than now to schedule my time, so that the writing rope I've been swinging on doesn't fray and snap.  Jessica Bell (The Alliterative Allomorph) to the rescue!  Jessica and I are newly formed critique partners, and I'm ecstatic about our partnership.  I've read some of her fiction and her poetry, and I "get" her. Probably because I write like her.  Our styles are similar, our preferred genres are in the same family, and our positions along our journeys are comparable.  (Except she's "more published" than I am :D)

We've discussed how much we can read/critique at a time and set up a regular schedule when we'll swap chapters.  This is good for me on so many levels.  First, it gives me much-needed deadlines.  I've always worked most efficiently and effectively with a looming deadline.  Second, it propels me into the revision stage with the chapters I've written, while pushing me to write the chapters I've outlined but haven't reached yet.  Since this is my first experience with a writing project of this magnitude, I've tried to listen to the advice of many successful authors and pen the entire first draft, before beginning the revision process.  But in all honesty, I don't think that's the best approach, for me.  I reach a certain point and just can't seem to move forward, for want of revising the early plot and character groundwork that isn't right (enough) for later chapters.

And, did I mention how excited I am to start reading Jessica's book??  I know the premise and have read excerpts.  Her characters are authentic and people I want to cheer on, my kind of people with tormenting inner conflicts and a support system that contributes to their problems more than helps them through.  She's brilliant, and if you don't follow her blog yet, here's the link again *wink* --->  The Alliterative Allomorph

In addition to my new writing schedule, I'm going to schedule time in every day for social networking and housework (in that order, LOL).  Otherwise, I'll sit here and converse on FB and tweet and read blogs, all day long.  Which I'd love to do, of course, but Overcome isn't going to write itself, is it?

What about you?  How do you schedule your time?  Do your writing/crit partners play a role in how you manage your time?

My best friend was the same way. She scoffed facebook, and swore she'd never join, but she did and she loves it!

I'm better able to schedule things now that my kids are in school. First thing after they're gone I do the social networking/blogging thing, then shift to writing, then house chores and, later, family time. I'm loving the balance!!

It's funny everyone is talking about scheduling. I posted some links yesterday. I finally got a schedule together and its working out well...so far.
I wrote my first draft without doing anything and let me tell you I know I will do it differently on the next idea. I've changed so much on this one, my revisions are taking forever.
That is great with Jessica. She is really awesome. I found a couple of my CPs in the blogosphere too. What fun.
Have a great day!

My college stuff usually plays the biggest role in my time spending habits,

This year has thrown me off any sort of schedule...it's been too busy with unexpected things usurping my time.
Hopefully when the kid gets back to school next week, I'll be able to get some kind of routine under control.

I'm always running behind on critiquing my CPs, due to the above.
I have spent one (part of a) day this entire summer working on my revision. Which makes me sad. I just haven't had any time for myself or my work. Hopefully that will change beginning next week.

Congrats on working with Jessica...she's wonderful. :)

Have a delightful holiday weekend!
Love,
Lola

That's great you have someone to hold you accountable.
And several friends keep bugging me to join Facebook, but I don't have the time right now.

My crit partners have a huge role in how I schedule my time. Not only do I have to block out time for crit group, but we make goals on how much we will write that week. So we have to make time. It's awesome. =)

Having CPs definitely lights a fire under my bum, most of the time.

As for my time management? I try to spend around an hour when I first wake up reading blogs. I take this time to eat and drink my beverage of choice. Then I got to the gym. When I get home from the gym, I give myself thirty minutes to do any dishes, etc, that need to be done, and then I sit down at my computer intending to work.

What usually happens is that I check my email or Twitter every fifteen minutes. Usually nothing there, so it's a quick diversion. :)

I've been thinking so much about this lately, with all my children in school again I thought I would have more time to get things done. Boy, how wrong I was. It seems I have less and I keep thinking to myself how can I fix this and I keep drawing a blank. Maybe it's time for a paper list, and a proper schedule.

And for all the laughs, enjoy facebook. It can be nice for the downtime and connections, with family who are not close by. My family all lives cross border in Canada, and if it weren't for facebook, I would know nothing of their lives. It's a tremendous blessing.

I avoided Facebook and Twitter for as long as I could. I'm on both now and spend more time there then I should.

Regarding my time - I set small goals each day - a list. I've learned not to be too strict with myself. Life holds too many 'shoulds' as it is. Do what you can, keep your head above water, and relax.

I haven't joined the Facebook mania...yet:)

I love the accountability that strong critique partners can be. It makes the writing life seem far less lonely!

I finally joined fb myself but I'm not doing as much with it as I thought I would. Maybe once a month I go on and read what's going on. I'm doing much more on the blog & twitter but twitter drives me crazy for a variety of reasons.

So glad you and Jessica are critique partners! You both write literary fiction, what a perfect match! I want to read both your books.

Hi Nicole- Ugh. Time management. I have SO much trouble finding time to write and get everything done. I have two kids, a job, a book, an everything. My best thing I do is escape to the coffee shop on Saturday mornings to work... my hubby takes the kids and I get focused non-work related writing time.

Congrats on your new partnership! It's so exciting to find someone that's similar to you. It sounds like the start of a beautiful relationship.

And I for one am glad you joined FB! :D

Congrats on finding someone who "gets" you. That's hard.

As for time management ... uh, I could totally be better at it, but for me, it's day job, family, writing bed. In a nutshell anyway. The writing part isn't usually until after 10p and then I do #amwriting on twitter with my CPs. They're good motivators to crank out new wordage.

Facebook is fun! It was such a terrific procrastinating tool in college, lol. It's great for keeping in touch with family and old high school and college friends. I'm glad you're having fun with it!

I try to schedule time on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday as a permanent thing, and then just hope more time miraculously appears on other days. It is definitely not easy.

I'm SO laughing that you joined FB! I said I never would but have been seriously considering it the last couple of weeks! Not sure what is changing my mind. Good luck with your writing, schedules and deadlines!

Oooh, I love facebook! And I really try not to be writing a draft while my CP's are looking at it. It makes it too hard to keep my train of thought going. I like to have them look at something that's already done.

Facebook, Twitter, Blogs. You're wise to schedule your time. Otherwise, these three wonderful resources will take over.

And I'm so happy you have such a wonderful critique partner!

Welcome to FB. I'm glad to be your friend. I was all excited when I started too, but then it got to be routine. It's a nice way to keep up with people day-to-day.

Congrats on having Jessica be your critique buddy. I've made some good friends by starting off as critique partners.

Schedule? I'm a mess right now. I can't even keep up with comments. It's all ad-hoc these days. And it will get worse when school begins next week.

My MC can't even handle Twitter. I just can't seem to find the time for a lot of social networking. If you do, it's good though.

I'm trying to re-organize just so I can more efficiently follow blogs.

I haven't joined FB yet - I'm trying to avoid it - there's just no extra time. :)

With school starting again - I'm worried about scheduling too!

No shame in liking Facebook. Can't count the number of friendships I've actually rekindled...for real ;-)

Schedules don't agree with me but I still manage to get a fair amount of work done when I really need to.

I only just started Facebook under a month ago so...

Wow! I'm blushing right now ... I'm so sorry I didn't read this yesterday! I had a major work crisis (as you know now that you're on FB ;o)

Hey! I'm a so not "more published" than you! You have had short stories published. All I've had published are English text books. That's not being "published". That's being "hired to write" from a brief - not my ideas - just writing what I'm told - plus I'm not always credited rightly for them either - plus I don't get royalties, just one-off payments :o(.

If I could have MY OWN writing published, then, gosh, I think I'd faint from the excitement!

So so so so so happy to be buddying up with you! This is going to wonderful for us. SOOO EXCITED!!!!

Heh. Schedule? What? I write at night when I get a chance to, or scribble notes longhand during lunch, or while on a long drive (that's using a voice recorder, naturally... *cough*). But schedule? Boy, I wish I had one.
